Stick Out Campaign
There are a lot of ways to get involved in the community and make a difference, but few are as easy or have as much impact as a Stick Out Campaign. The mission of the Stick Out Campaign is to encourage people to come out, as straight allies or as LGBT persons, by saturating communities with LGBT-friendly or LGBT-identifying images. The HRC Equality Logo sticker is a perfect image to use since it's a strong brand with broad appeal amoung both straight and LBGT persons. It also helps that the stickers are readily available in large quantities to those willing to seriously take on the Stick Out Campaign. In truth, any available sticker that supports this mission should be considered.
Strategy
The visibility campaign works by creating an atmosphere where one can concretely know that they are not alone but are in fact part of a larger community that fully supports LGBT equality. The HRC Equality Logo in particular serves as a conversation starter since many outside the community do not know what it means. Starting conversations is another key component to the strategy behind this campaign since conversations are a necessary vehicle for changing attitudes. After a person is fully aware of what the logo means, they will start to notice the stickers more often -- each time reminded of that first converation. It's pretty cool to be able to replay a message in someone's head every time they see a certain image, eh?
Getting Involved
In 2005, the local project distributed 13,000 stickers throughout the DFW metroplex. In 2006, we are distributing 36,000 stickers. Become a volunteer to help identify Stick Out Stations and help distribute these stickers to help build a visible presence within the larger community.
