The Be Who You Are special section evolved from a long tradition of publishing a public petition in The Dallas Morning News. This section strengthens the power of the petition by becoming a means to drive home the message of equality. The special section includes articles and photos illustrating human stories behind the labels. By highlighting these positive stories, new straight allies are formed as they learn about and connect with our human struggles. Further, by celebrating the lives and contributions of LGBT citizens to society in government, business, culture and sports, these open and honest role models help encourage others to take their next step in living openly.

HRC, in partnership with PFLAG, is proud to launch our first ever resource specifically for friends and family – A Straight Guide to GLBT Americans. The guide is a resource that helps map some of the emotions straight people feel when someone first comes out to them, walks people through myths and facts about GLBT Americans, and outlines ways straight people can demonstrate their support.
