Quoting the Bible to Support a Dying Prejudice?

The Bible has been used for centuries to support various forms of predudice and power struggle. This includes:

  • to support the Divine Right of Kings in 1215
  • to oppose Galileo in the 17th century
  • to oppose Darwin in the 19th century
  • to support slavery and apartheid in the 19th and 20th centuries
  • to keep women from being educated, voting and being ordained in the 20th and 21st century

“Today the Bible is quoted to continue the oppression and rejection of homosexual people. The Bible has lost each of those previous battles. It will lose the present battle as well,” said retired Newark Bishop John Shelby Spong.

“Just as the Church was historically wrong in its treatment of women, so now as a result of your leadership, we are espousing a position about homosexuality that is dated, uninformed, inhumane and frankly embarrassing,” Spong wrote. “No learned person stands there today.”

“I take the long view of history,” Bishop Gene Robinson says. “The debate will end with full inclusion of GLBT people in the life and ministry of the Church. We’re really only arguing about timing.”

For many, it is only a matter of time before GLBT people are fully accepted and no longer rejected based on Biblical interpretations. How have you experienced or seen the Bible used maliciously or to oppress others? How many years do you feel are left before the gay community is fully accepted?

Bible Used Incorrectly

Just because the Bible has been misused does not make the Bible false. Any philosophy, literature, religion or idea can be misinterpreted and misused.

The Scriptures place parameters around sexual activity and declares God's plan for sex as one man and one woman in marriage. Jesus affirmed this as the only model.

A homosexual who is a Christian can live a celibate life of joy, just like the heterosexual single. The Scriptures condemn the behavior - not the proclivity or temptation. It is, indeed, another misuse of Scripture to say otherwise.

i am a christian and i am

i am a christian and i am deciding whether or not to come out. I understand the biblical mandates on sexuality but how do i help others understand that? I want to be out but not in disobedience.

I am a Christian and I am

Do not persue an active gay lifestyle and you will not be disobedant...that semple

Christians Coming Out

It's not going to be easy but it is going to lead to freedom! Christians who keep silent about their sexual concerns, temptations, and desires remain in bondage to them. But since these are private matters, care should be taken with whom one becomes vulnerable.

First, none of us should be wholly identified by our sexual desires. To do so reduces us to behaviors rather than a person. So I suggest you reveal your concerns in terms of it being just one aspect of who you are.

Second, we all need accountability. Not from people who will beat us up, but from people who will stand beside us with their own vulnerabilities in view. Choose these people carefully!

Third, and most importantly, I suggest you emphasize that you didn't choose your sexual desires, but you are choosing to walk with those desires in obedience to God and by God's grace. Since this involves being joyfully celibate, avoid people or groups who encourage you to engage or "explore" your sexual proclivities with others. That leads to bondage - not freedom!

Bible used incorrectly

You stated that the scriptures do not condemn proclivity nor temptation of behavior. If that is so then you must be saying that Jesus was mistaken when in the book of Matthew He tells us that the mere thought of a sin in our minds is the same as committing that act. A Christian must strive a Godly lifestyle and that includes a Godly mindset as well.

Incorrect Interpretations

Before I say anything else, I have very close friends who live in homosexual relationships. I love them and their families dearly, and I cherish their friendship. Having said that, they know I disagree with their lifestyles. We just don't talk about it anymore - everything that needs to be said between us about the subject has been. So don't accuse me of hate - I follow what Christ said in loving the sinner but hating the sin. I am a sinner forgiven by grace myself.

The fact that people have misinterpreted the Bible in years past was simply due to ignorance and self-interest. Just an many times, people who quoted the Bible have been wrong. Besides, was Darwin really right? Did we all emerge from teh primordial ooze? There is easily as much evidence that says no as that which evolutionists use to justify their view. However, it is clear - and in the New Testament, not just the Old - that homosexuality is not an acceptable practice. Read Romans, Chapter 1 - specifically verses 26 & 27.

Are people born homosexual? I don't know. I know it's not genetic, because Dr. Dean Hamer's research has been disproved. It is admitted to be a mental issue by the American Psychological Association. Can it be overcome? Yes - I have seen it personally. There are a myriad of other people who have mental and physical issues of one sort or another that overcome with the grace of our Heavenly Father. Because, as it says numerous times in the Bible in various ways, "I can do all thins through Him (Christ) who strengthens me." - Phil 4:13. Paul was chained to 2 Roman guards in a Roman prison awaiting trial for treason when Luke wrote than down for him, half-blind, possibly suffering from epilepsy and certainyl sore from the shipwrecks and the times he had been beaten or stoned and left for dead.

Can a homosexual be converted to heterosexual? Again, I don't have the answer for that. But for those who question why God would have them live lives without marriage, there are many unmarried heterosexual Christians who manage to do so without falling into the trap of sexual sin.

Amen to incorrect interpretations

I read in your add that you're saying the bible lost some past battles, and it's going to lose this one with homosexuality, but what's really happened is someone misquoted it. The bible is misquoted often. I had to re-read your add again because I can't believe you would print that - much less believe it!

Really the bible is full of very surprising information. For instance the bible says the world is round Isaiah 40:22. The bible also says the earth hangs on nothing Job 26:7. The bible also mentions what we call dinosaurs (read the description closely - no animal we see today fits the description - no elephant, no crodidile, no hippo nada) in Job 40:15. Why am I telling you these things? Think about it. This book was written hundreds of years before Galileo (and that's just scratching the surface - the bible has tons of stuff in it).

If those who quoted the bible to dispute Galileo knew their bible then his theories would not have been surprising (they probably would have said "Yeah you're right!"). For instance we see the evidence nearly everyday proving the flood existed - just like the bible says, but lots of people say it's not true (they just haven't read it to find out). God says in Romans 1:20 that we can see that God exists by looking at the things He made - His creation. Well if the bible is scientifically true, as I believe it is, it is easy to see. If you examine the evidence with an open mind (personally I find the evidence I've seen used for evolution - if real physical evidence - supports creation - it's just how you look at it). If you read the bible maybe you'd understand God's point of view for this subject (sin - we are all sinners).

God has given us rules for our own good. Sin has never benefited anyone - not really benefited. God knows what's good for us better than we do - He created us. So when anyone sins (as in homosexuality - or any sin) there is a price to pay - but with homosexuality it's not just a cultural one when you come out - Read Romans 1:27 - remember this was written hundreds of years before Galileo. How did God know this to put it in his Bible? He's God! It comes with the job...

I would like to know how many times you've read the bible yourself? The Holy Bible - The King James Version preferrably - it has never been proven wrong in any way, shape, or form. I challenge you to find something in the bible that is not true. People hear these sayings like "The bible is full of counterdictions." I always ask where! - show me one! They're passing on something they've heard without checking it out. There are simple explainations you'd easily understand if someone would take the time to tell you (maybe you need to ask). I'm not sure if it's because they are afraid of believing in God or what.

Ultimately it comes down to heaven or hell. Where do you want to go when you die? Death is the only guaranteed thing that will happen to us. YOU could die TONIGHT. If the bible is true - and I believe it is - then God made this world. If He did then we need to listen to what He says. Jesus spoke many times about heaven, but He spoke more about hell. If the bible is true then there is a hell with fire and brimstone as your final eternal destination. This is too important of a decision to blow off - you need to research this out. This decision is yours alone - you don't go to heaven or hell for something someone else has done - God is just. Hell is forever - that's what the bible says And that means there is also a heaven, and the only way to get there is through belief in Jesus Christ.
